August 13, 2004. L.I. driver chased down, then a splashdown A LONG ISLAND MAN allegedly high on crack was arrested yesterday after a low-speed chase that ended with a big splash. Suffolk County cops said they finally caught up with Yaysn Abdul-Martin after he drove his Lincoln Mark V into a background pond in North Patchogue. But before Abdul-Martin escaped the sinking car, he was seen by cops trying to light a crack pipe, cops said. Suffolk County Highway Patrol Officer Armando Reyes said he was on patrol a few minutes after midnight when a passing motorist pointed out Abdul-Martin, 32, driving erratically on County Road 83. Using lights, sirens and a bullhorn, the cops tried to get Abdul-Martin to stop, but he refused, even after several other police cars arrived on the scene. Finally, after about seven tension-free minutes, the chase ended when Abdul-Martin turned onto Clio Place, eased up a driveway, crashed thorough a gate, crossed a lawn and glided slowly into the salt lake pond behind the house, Reyes said. "We were yelling for him to get out," Reyes said. "I noticed he was trying to light a crack pipe." With water reaching his chin level, the officers got him to crawl out. Abdul-Martin, of Smithtown, was charged with driving while impaired by drugs and assorted motor-vehicle offenses. |
