Cult Movies - Barbed Wire Dolls
Jess Franco's nasty little woman-in-prison sexploitation flick, Barbed Wire Dolls (1975), is possibly the sleaziest film of the genre. Filled with bizarre dialogue, sadistic characters and one of the oddest scenes in cinema history, it's a definite must see for the discriminating cult fan.

Barbed Wire Dolls stars the Debased favorite, Lina Romay, as a falsely accused young woman sent to a shady prison in South America. In a scene that has to be seen to be believed, we are taken via flashback to a sleeping Romay at home with her father. For some reason she sleeps buck naked and speaks calmly to her father when he awakens her. Pops tries to rape her (a sweaty Jess Franco plays the role) but Romay is able to thwart his initial attempt. Suddenly, and quite inexplicably, the scene becomes slow motion as the two fight and struggle from room to room. The odd part? The scene wasn't filmed in slow motion - they act the scene out in slow motion! It's the most retarded shit you will ever see.

Lina Romay on the slow motion scene:

"It was a decision that Jess made. You know it's very complicated because you tend to forget what you're doing. You go like that (makes slow arm movements) and then right after that you forget that you are supposed to be in slow motion and then you go like this (snatches a cup from the table at normal speed) and then it's no good. It's very complicated because I don't have any training as a mime. I don't know how to mime."

Anyway - the prison she is sent to is run by an evil "Directress" who wears sheer see through tops, and short shorts. The Directress, of course, enjoys getting it on with the woman inmates and dishing out punishment. She is joined by an evil doctor who enjoys laying pipe on the inmates and requesting them to bring friends with them for "check ups." The Governor of the island is also in on the gig and he too enjoys the company of the beaten, starved inmates. They encounter a problem however when the Governor receives a letter from an inmate describing the death and torture that goes on in the prison. The Governor begins to worry that a similar letter might get out to a higher authority, so the three cretins turn up the tortures to frighten the woman into submission.

Lina Romay spends much time strapped naked to a bed frame and zapped with electricity. When she begins complaining about such inconveniences as dead mice in her prison supper, she gets more electricity and a long metal pole slammed up her anus. Between these bouts of torture the Directress reveals to the doctor that she killed Romay's father! They were lovers but he always had his eye on his young daughter. After the retarded slow motion fight, Romay ran past the Directress who then entered the house and whacked him one with a lamp.

Romay and her two cell buddies decide to make a break for it. They seduce the doctor with a promised threesome but stab him in the back before he even gets his pants off. They escape to the woods only to be tracked down by the most brutal of the prison guards, and a topless female guard with a machine gun! While the horny brute begins raping Romay's friend, another inmate kills the topless guard. Then, without explanation, another prison guard shows up and shoots the raping guard! I can't for the life of me tell you if the girl getting raped is killed because the scene is so inept. The guard fires his machine gun while the other guard screams in close up! Then he rolls off the girl naked but without bullet holes or blood!

So it's just Romay and her buddy left, they arrive at the Governors mansion and ask for help (the Governor hadn't had a chance to sex these two up), the Governor explains that help is available as the Directress emerges from the dark. She simply shoots the two and the film abruptly ends! A real sleazy, nasty little film that's also faced paced and full of laughs, if this genre is your cup of tea.

A special note must be made about one of Romay's cellmates who throughout the film lays on her bed and rubs her vagina for some reason or another.
