Ahh, the immortal dialogue of Umberto Lenzi's Cannibal Ferox (AKA Make Them Die Slowly, 1981) is music to any cult film fans ears. Lenzi's nasty little cannibal flick proudly claims to have been banned in thirty one countries on its poster art and video sleeves, and one can see why. Cannibal Ferox is a gloriously despicable movie mixing real animal slaughter (as did the superior Cannibal Holocaust) with graphic prosthetic human violence. The human body is torn apart in about every way imaginable; castration, beheadings, a woman hanging from hooks through the breasts, hands chopped off, eyes torn out, guts ripped from gaping chests, etc. You name it Cannibal Ferox got it.

Thankfully the unintentional humor that is found in Cannibal Ferox lightens the picture a bit. The hilarious dubbing, the obscenity laced dialogue, mixed with the sleazy European rock/jazz soundtrack will put you in fits. The great John Morghen (Giovanni Lombardo Radice) plays the sadistic Mike Logan to the hilt, snorting coke and sweating up a storm. This has to be one of the most over the top performances in the history of cinema. Then you have these two mob guys who are looking for Mike in Manhattan. These are the two funniest mother fuckers I have ever seen in a film. The scenes where they kill Mike's buddy and rough up his gal, are the funniest two scenes I have ever had the privilege to view.

The plot has to do with a group of dim witted students traveling to the Amazon to prove their friends thesis, "The Myth of the Cannibal." After a series of misadventures they run into Mike Logan and his injured buddy. Little do they know that Mike has been torturing the cannibals while in a drug induced frenzy. What follows is the familiar Italian cannibal theme of the tribes going crazy, ripping naive white kids to shreds in scenes of increasing brutality.

The demise of Mike Logan has achieved legendary status. He is castrated in brutal detail then patched up by the tribesman. When he tries to make a run for it he has his hand hacked off. Finally they drag this poor bastard to a table with a hole in the middle. He is positioned underneath the table with only the top half of his head sticking out. A cannibal nonchalantly whacks the top part off with a machete and nibbles on Mike's brains!

Grindhouse Releasing put out an incredible Laser Disc of Cannibal Ferox complete with new widescreen transfer, Dolby stereo, commentaries, a 45 of groovy Cannibal Ferox music and a Cannibal Ferox barf bag!
