Cult Movies - House on the Edge of the Park
I remember when the film Heat was coming out people were foaming at the mouth over the "historic" pairing of De Niro and Pacino. Yawn. Genre fans already know that the greatest acting pairing had already taken place years earlier: David Hess and Giovanni Lombardo Radice (AKA John Morghen) sweating it out in the same damned film! The film I speak of is none other than Ruggero Deodato's jaw dropping House on the Edge of the Park (1980).

The Last House on the Left set the template for this bizarre genre of film - films which revolve around sadistic madman raping and killing naive citizens only to have the tables turn on them during implausible twist endings. The twist endings uniformly speak about man's inhumanity toward man but always seem tacked on - an attempt to try to give meaning to the previous 90 minutes of extreme sadism. While a defense can be surmounted to defend Last House on the Left and maybe I Spit on Your Grave - House on the Edge of the Park is sick to its core. Mr. Deodato the jury has found you guilty for making one the most despicable flicks ever made!

So here we have Hess (The Last House on the Left), one of the most intense and frightening actors to ever grace the silver screen, and Radice (Cannibal Ferox) one of the most hilariously twitchy. These two actors have combined to create mucho onscreen chaos and to have them together in one flick is almost more than one can handle. In House on the Edge Hess plays ... well a sadistic madman and Radice plays ... why a shaky perverted retard! One wishes one of these genre directors would have teamed these two up in a series of flicks kinda like a Hope/Crosby for the Grindhouse fan! But alas, this never happened but we still have this nugget of filth to revisit their historic pairing.

House on the Edge of the Park concerns working class buddies Alex (Hess) and Ricky (Radice) who plan on "boogying" the weekend away until they meet with a rich couple that invite them to a swank party. The party consists of a group of rich assholes who get off on playing mind games with the horny Alex and mocking the slightly off Ricky. When Alex has his sexual advances mockingly declined and Ricky has his weekly wages taken from him in a rigged game of poker we know it's only a matter of time before the shit hits the fan. When Alex wields a straight razor and starts screaming about "twats" and "street fighting" we know these silly rich bastards have done messed with the wrong fellas.

Alex proceeds to beat the pampered boyfriends to a pulp, tying up his biggest adversary all to the amusement of Ricky. Once the house is secure and the party givers reduced to frightened sheep Alex informs Ricky that "Now we're going to have some fun with these cunts!" A really despicable aspect of House on the Edge of the Park is that the woman are shown either enjoying their rapes or being the seducers! Thank goodness Radice is on hand to supply some laughs with his strange ways because Hess by himself is almost impossible to take!

Alex proceeds to beat, piss on, and molest the party goers before stripping down a guest - announcing that she is a virgin - and brutally slashing her body with his straight razor - UGH! Ricky tells Alex that maybe they had enough fun for one night but Alex replies by slashing him in the belly with his razor! Alex snaps out of his daze to comfort his sliced up buddy, vowing to kill every one of the party givers for making him turn on his only friend!

While Alex is being distracted by bloody Ricky - the rich folk calmly brandish a gun and reveal their sinister plot! Of course Alex had raped and murdered this rich dudes sister and they invited him over the house so that they may murder him without repercussions. Of course one wonders did they have to let shit get THIS out of hand before pulling out the gun! They proceed to blow Alex's dick off and take turns popping bullets into his ass as he squirms around in the swimming pool. Really disturbing shit (Hess screams for what seems like half an hour while his face contorts in a bizarre effect)!
