Directed by Renee Daalder - Massacre At Central High (1976) - is one of
the all time cult greats. Political allegory? Sleazy exploitation? Art
film? It's all of 'em rolled into one hell of an entertaining film. There
is not one second of wasted screen time in this gem - from beginning to
end this sucker is a rollicking good time. Shot in a measly three weeks, Massacre
is surprisingly well shot and acted (even the creepy Andrew Stevens is
good) with a tricky screenplay that makes for great debate.
Massacre concerns new student David's (Derrel Maury - what ever became of this guy?) arrival at Central High, a school run by a group
of Nazi bullies who terrorize the student body. One of the tormentors, Mark (Andrew Stevens), is an old pal of David's whose keen on
having him join the gang. David follows the gang around watching them beat on his peers but does not join in on the fun. When the gang tries
to rape a couple gals in an empty classroom David beats the shit out of them.
David tries to rally the bullied students into fighting back but they are too frightened. While repairing a car David's leg is crushed when the gang
of thugs drops the car on him. Soon the group of bullies begin dropping like flies in various horrific ways as David ruthlessly fucks them up. The once meager
student body begins living it up as they begin taking over the school.
With the gang eliminated the students begin fighting for power -
new bullies emerge and the weak begin acting as evil as their previous
oppressors. An angered David, now complexity devoid of emotion, begins
knocking everybody off! Highlights include a nerdy bully opening up
his bomb rigged locker and a threesome in a tent broken up by rolling
boulders that crush it flat!
If you've seen the Slater film Heathers than you know how this sucker
is going to end (Heathers, an enjoyable film, is a complete Central
High rip off).
The initial run of Massacre At Central High was a disaster but a surprising
positive review by the influential New York Times critic Vincent Canby
(who included it on his best of the year list and stated, "It might even
be read as a metaphor for the rise and fall of the Third Reich") led
to a succession of bookings.
One of the oddest aspects of Massacre At Central High is the lack
of adults - there are no teachers or parents in the entire film (the
end features disturbingly old alumni mixed in with the student body).
These psychotic kids are on their own leading to an other worldly feel
when watching the film.
Much has been written on the meaning of the
film - the "revolution" of the poor student body over the rich tormentors
- the Nazi like mind set of the bullies (who at one point assault a
student for painting a swastika in protest) - the apparent message that
the ideologies of the fascist "right" (the tormentors) and the fake
humanist "left" (represented by the false intellectuals and hippies)
aren't worth a shit - etc. For a fascinating reading on the film check
out the always reliable Danny Peary's take in his great Cult Movies
book series.
If the above synopsis doesn't get you geared up to check out this forgotten masterpiece
did I mention that the super sexy Rainbeaux Smith costars? That's right
Rainbeaux, one of the great second fiddle 70's exploitation babes, does
her thing prancing around naked and participating in a threesome before
getting crushed by a freakin' boulder. You gotta love it.
Massacre At Central High - One of Debased's most highly recommended films!
