The Italian band
Goblin has been responsible for some of the greatest soundtracks
in film history, but are sadly unknown outside of European horror
circles.
When Dario Argento
needed someone to score his upcoming film Profondo Rosso, Daria
Nicolodi (Argento actress/writer and former girlfriend) suggested
a group named Cherry Five whom she had been listening to at the
time. Two members of the band would form their own band, Goblin,
which consisted of Claudio Simonetti on keyboards, Massima Morante
on guitar, Fabio Pignatelli on bass, and Walter Pignatelli on
percussion.
The score for Profondo
Rosso was a smash remaining at number one on the Italian charts
for weeks and making Goblin instantly famous in their homeland.
Their score was an intricate part to the mysterious feel of the
film as opposed to merely being background noise like most soundtracks
of today. But it wasn't till their monumental score for Suspiria
that they revolutionized horror film scores.
Argento had Goblin
create the major themes before the film was made in order to play
the music while filming to get the actors in the correct rhythm.
The result is one of the loudest most intense scores ever created
and one can only imagine what a different film Suspiria would
be with a different soundtrack.
Other Goblin favorites include music for - Dawn of the Dead, Tenebrae - Phenomena -
Buried Alive (Beyond the Darkness) - I Can't Sleep - to name a few.
